Kids Guide - What is Domestic Abuse?

Domestic abuse is when somebody in your family hits, hurts or frightens another person in your family. This is abuse.

The abuser may be your dad, your mum, your mum or dad's partner, your carer or anyone you have lived with.

Domestic abuse is a crime - nobody has the right to hit, hurt or frighten another person.

I am being abused or bullied by someone at home - what can I do?

You have the right to feel safe. Adults, including parents are not allowed to harm children. If you are being abused or bullied at home by an adult or by anyone you live with, you have the right to be protected by a social worker. The person who is abusing you may say it is all your fault but this is not true. No one deserves to be abused.

If the person abusing you asks you to keep secrets - don't.

Tell an adult as soon as you can - this can be your teacher, a neighbour, your grandparent, a doctor or nurse or anyone you can talk to.

You can call theNSPCC - The National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children - they have specialist people who will help and give some advice, phone free on 0808 8005000.

You can also talk to someone at Childline. You can phone Childline free at any time by calling 0800 1111. If you don't get through first time don't give up. Keep trying - someone will answer.

Remember that whatever happens, it is not your fault<./strong>

How can I help a friend who is being abused or bullied at home?

If a friend tells you they are living with domestic violence and abuse:

  • Listen to them.
  • Tell them it is not their fault. No one deserves to be abused.
  • Tell them they can get help.
  • Tell them about this site.
Be a good friend to them but try to help them to talk to an adult about the domestic violence and abuse. You could also help them to make a call to the Childline number - 0800 1111. Be careful - do not promise to do more than you can. If you feel your friend is asking you to do too much, talk to an adult or to Childline.

Take care of yourself as well.
